2019 NFL Mock Draft #3

The combine is behind us now, but free agency is right around the corner. Things are starting to truly heat up this offseason. It’s time for a fresh look at the upcoming draft next month. And this time we’ll add a second round!

The Sports Guys 2019 NFL Mock Draft

First Round (Third Edition):

1. Arizona Cardinals select: Kyler Murray (QB, Oklahoma)
2nd Mock: Nick Bosa (Edge, Ohio State)
1st Mock (trade with Oakland): Nick Bosa (Edge, Ohio State)

For the first time this offseason, I am going with someone other than Bosa. Unless the Cardinals are fooling all of us, it seems obvious that Kyler Murray will be the selection. Something to keep an eye on though is a trade up from the Raiders to select Murray with this pick. Gruden apparently loves him too.

2. San Francisco 49ers select: Nick Bosa (Edge, Ohio State)
2nd Mock: Josh Allen (Edge, Kentucky)
1st Mock: Greedy Williams (CB, LSU)

The 49ers can add the best player in the draft without having to trade up or anything. Bosa will seemingly fall into their lap and become an impact edge rusher immediately, something they desperately need.

3. New York Jets select: Quinnen Williams (DT, Alabama)
2nd Mock: Quinnen Williams (DT, Alabama)
1st Mock: Josh Allen (Edge, Kentucky)

Same pick for the second straight mock. Unless they trade down, the Jets are primed to add a stud up front to help them as they likely switch to a 4-3 defense. Pairing Q. Williams up with L. Williams would be terrifying for years to come. This would also allow them to invest their cap space elsewhere.

4. Oakland Raiders select: Montez Sweat (Edge, Mississippi State)
2nd Mock (trade with Denver): Dwayne Haskins (QB, Ohio State)
1st Mock (trade with Arizona): Jonah Williams (OT, Alabama)

Josh Allen could be the pick here, but Sweat set a combine record in the 40 and could be slightly overdrafted as a result. Seems like a Raiders move. They need to add an edge rusher in the wake of trading away Mack, Sweat would become that guy.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers select: Josh Allen (Edge, Kentucky)
2nd Mock: Jonah Williams (OT, Alabama)
1st Mock: Clelin Ferrell (Edge, Clemson)

While addressing the offensive line is a priority this offseason, adding impact defenders has to be as well. Allen falls right into their lap here and would be an easy selection. Like many of the spots early in the draft, this could be a potential trade waiting to happen. But with Jacksonville and Denver seemingly solving QB issues through trade/free agency, the most likely trade partners are no more.

6. New York Giants select: Dwayne Haskins (QB, Ohio State)
2nd Mock: Drew Lock (QB, Missouri)
1st Mock: Dwayne Haskins (QB, Ohio State)

This would be a great scenario for the Giants, who get my #1 quarterback without having to trade up. Haskins could sit behind Eli for a year before taking over, or start over him if they are smart (cause Eli sucks now). Either way they finally have a future at the position.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars select: Rashan Gary (Edge, Michigan)
2nd Mock: Rashan Gary (Edge, Michigan)
1st Mock (trade with Oakland): Devin White (LB, LSU)

With Fowler traded last year and Jackson recently cut, the vaunted defensive line in Jacksonville has fallen off a bit. Gary would help beef it back up and provide a needed impact. They can afford to add talent like this as Nick Foles is soon to join them via free agency solving their QB dilemma. Another option here is a tackle like Taylor or Williams.

8. Miami Dolphins (via trade with Detroit) select: Drew Lock (QB, Missouri)
2nd Mock: Clelin Ferrell (Edge, Clemson)
1st Mock: Ed Oliver (DT, Houston)

Miami is hitting the reset button this offseason. Gone already is Coach Gase, and the team is now looking to move on from Ryan Tannehill. While Murray and Haskins would be sexier picks, Lock has a ton of potential and could be a very good quarterback at the pro level. Look for Miami to be aggressive getting one of the top 3 guys.

9. Buffalo Bills select: D.K. Metcalf (WR, Mississippi)
2nd Mock (trade with Washington): Kyler Murray (QB, Oklahoma)
1st Mock (trade with Washington): Daniel Jones (QB, Duke)

While the Bills would be wise to address their offensive line here, I think getting improved weapons for Josh Allen could be the choice instead. Metcalf tore up the combine and moved up the board for nearly everybody. It would be shocking if he is not the first wide receiver taken next month. Plan A for Buffalo was trading for Antonio Brown, but Metcalf is Plan B.

10. Denver Broncos select: Jawaan Taylor (OT, Florida)
2nd Mock (trade with Oakland): Greedy Williams (CB, LSU)
1st Mock: Drew Lock (QB, Missouri)

Nearly went with Greedy Williams here to rejuvenate the secondary, but protecting Joe Flacco and beefing up the run game is priority one. My guess is that the Broncos run the ball a lot this season and Taylor can help them succeed there. He and Jonah Williams are my top tackles this year, both would be solid selections here.

11. Cincinnati Bengals select: Devin White (LB, LSU)
2nd Mock: Devin White (LB, LSU)
1st Mock: Quinnen Williams (DT, Alabama)

The Bengals could be a sneaky team that trades up for a quarterback, but staying put gets them an elite defender instead. For the second mock in a row, White heads to Cincinnati. He’s a three down linebacker that could become an absolute star in the NFL. I believe he’s got top five talent, but because he isn’t an edge rusher, he’ll slide to about right here next month.

12. Green Bay Packers select: Marquise Brown (WR, Oklahoma)
2nd Mock: Ed Oliver (DT, Houston)
1st Mock: Rashan Gary (Edge, Michigan)

Free agency will unveil a lot, especially in the case of Green Bay. They have a lot of holes in their front seven to fill, so we’ll see who they sign this month. Two first round picks will help too. Apparently though, the Packers were inquiring about Antonio Brown. They seem genuinely interested in bringing in another starting receiver opposite Adams. Brown gives them a legit deep threat like they had with Jordy Nelson, but his speed will help all over the field.

13. Detroit Lions (via trade with Miami) select: T.J. Hockenson (TE, Iowa)
1st and 2nd Mock: Montez Sweat (Edge, Mississippi State)

By trading down, the Lions picked up an extra second round pick (while giving up a mid-round pick in exchange). Because of that, they should address their hole at tight end here, and wait on edge rusher where there is better depth. Hockenson is one of two tight ends from Iowa who will likely go in the first round. Hockenson offers better blocking and could remind former Patriot coach Matt Patricia of another great all-around tight end...

14. Atlanta Falcons select: Clelin Ferrell (Edge, Clemson)
2nd Mock: Jeffrey Simmons (DL, Mississippi State)
1st Mock: Dexter Lawrence (DT, Clemson)

While the interior of the defensive line could use some work, they used the franchise tag on Grady Jarrett, at least ensuring they have a legit presence inside. I worry about their pass rush, however, as Beasley has fallen off after his breakout season and McKinley hasn’t shown anything. Ferrell starred at nearby Clemson and would give the Falcons increased depth and productivity on the edge. He not only gets after quarterbacks but can stop the run as well.

15. Washington Redskins select: Brian Burns (Edge, Florida State)
1st and 2nd Mock (trade with Buffalo): Cody Ford (OL, Oklahoma)

With the trade for Case Keenum, Washington is seemingly out of the quarterback sweepstakes. Other needs include pass rusher, safety, guard, wide receiver, and even tight end. The strength of this draft is up front on defense, so edge rusher it is. Burns has consistently been a first round prospect for me, but he moved up the board for everyone after a stellar combine. He’s likely a top twenty pick.

16. Carolina Panthers select: Jonah Williams (OT, Alabama)
2nd Mock: Greg Little (OT, Ole Miss)
1st Mock: Jaylon Ferguson (Edge, Louisiana Tech)

I love Jonah’s potential, so this could be the steal of the draft for me. Carolina clearly has other needs, such as an edge rusher, but Williams is my best available player.

17. Cleveland Browns select: Devin Bush (LB, Michigan)
2nd Mock (trade with Minnesota): Jawaan Taylor (OT, Florida)
1st Mock: Marquise Brown (WR, Oklahoma)

Another perfect fit as Bush fills right in for recently cut linebacker Jamie Collins. Bush is a stud on tape, and he was also a stud this past week at the combine. Whoever gets him will enjoy him for three downs all game long.

18. Minnesota Vikings select: Greg Little (OT, Ole Miss)
2nd Mock (trade with Cleveland): Deandre Baker (CB, Georgia)
1st Mock: Greg Little (OT, Ole Miss)

Minnesota’s O-line was awful last year so they must make protecting Cousins a higher priority this offseason. Little has immense potential and has a chance to be the best tackle in this draft class.

19. Tennessee Titans select: Noah Fant (TE, Iowa)
2nd Mock (trade with Pittsburgh): Devin Bush (LB, Michigan)
1st Mock: Jachai Polite (Edge, Florida)

Delanie Walker is getting older and happens to be coming off a lost season due to injury. Fant would give the team another great receiving option, something Mariota desperately needs. His speed is tremendous for a tight end, something he showed off in Indy this past week. Tennessee needs all the playmakers they can get.

20. Pittsburgh Steelers select: Greedy Williams (CB, LSU)
2nd Mock (trade with Tennessee): Jachai Polite (Edge, Florida)
1st Mock: Deandre Baker (CB, Georgia)

Considering I’ve put Williams in the top ten of both mocks so far, the Steelers are getting great value here. I’m sure they’d love one of the top receivers or linebackers to fall to them here, but Greedy is a really good consolation prize. He’s my top corner and would quickly become Pittsburgh’s top corner as well.

21. Seattle Seahawks select: Deandre Baker (CB, Georgia)
2nd Mock: T.J. Hockenson (TE, Iowa)
1st Mock: Devin Bush (LB, Michigan)

A mini-cornerback run… Seattle is trying to rebuild their defense on the fly, as the entire legion of boom is now gone. Baker gives them a starting caliber corner to build around in the secondary.

22. Baltimore Ravens select: Josh Jacobs (RB, Alabama)
2nd Mock: N’Keal Harry (WR, Arizona State)
1st Mock: Jeffrey Simmons (DL, Mississippi State)

This seems obvious following the release of Alex Collins. The team has mentioned how the wish to bring in an elite running back to partner with Lamar Jackson in the backfield. If they don’t sign one in the offseason, this would be a dream pick for the team.

23. Houston Texans select: Irv Smith Jr. (TE, Alabama)
2nd Mock: Josh Jacobs (RB, Alabama)
1st Mock: Noah Fant (TE, Iowa)

Similar to Baltimore, running back is a position of need this offseason. But with Jacobs off the board, there is no point to taking one here. Tight end is another need though, especially with all the health concerns they’ve had at receiver. Smith has the tools to be really good, although he is still inexperienced.

24. Oakland Raiders (from Chicago) select: Ed Oliver (DT, Houston)
2nd Mock: Christian Wilkins (DT, Clemson)
1st Mock: Deionte Thompson (S, Alabama)

With all of the studs in the front seven in this draft, teams in the twenties will likely have the option of some of them who fall. Oliver is one such guy. He was once considered one of the best players in the draft, but the buzz has fallen off a little. He did put up some impressive numbers at the combine though, which could raise his stock again. The Raiders front seven would start to look imposing with Oliver here and Sweat earlier.

25. Philadelphia Eagles select: A.J. Brown (WR, Mississippi)
2nd Mock: Brian Burns (Edge, Florida State)
1st Mock: Trayvon Mullen (CB, Clemson)

Golden Tate was a nice addition this year, but he is now a free agent. The Eagles, tight on cap space, may have to look to the draft to find another starting receiver. Brown possesses nice speed that would offset Alshon very well with this offense.

26. Indianapolis Colts select: Christian Wilkins (DT, Clemson)
2nd Mock: Dexter Lawrence (DT, Clemson)
1st Mock: N’Keal Harry (WR, Arizona State)

The Colts overachieved on defense this past season. They need to add a lot of talent through free agency and the draft in order to sustain that success. Cap space won’t be an issue in free agency, and adding to the front seven should be easy in this loaded draft. Wilkins is a potential top 20 pick that the Colts would love to draft here.

27. Oakland Raiders (from Dallas) select: Cody Ford (OL, Oklahoma)
2nd Mock: Marquise Brown (WR, Oklahoma)
1st Mock (trade with Arizona): D.K. Metcalf (WR, Mississippi)

With Antonio Brown now in Oakland, Derek Carr needs a cleaner pocket to throw from. Ford is a beast that can play multiple positions up front in the NFL. This is another player that could easily be drafted higher than this.

28. Los Angeles Chargers select: Daniel Jones (QB, Duke)
2nd Mock: Dre’Mont Jones (DT, Ohio State)
1st Mock: Derrick Brown (DT, Auburn)

The Chargers are still winning with Rivers, but have to start prepping for his retirement. Jones would be a great understudy. He could sit and learn behind Rivers for a couple years or so, then take over when the time is right.

29. Kansas City Chiefs select: Byron Murphy (CB, Washington)
1st and 2nd Mock: Byron Murphy (CB, Washington)

The Chiefs take Murphy for the third straight mock. They have to improve their defense, particularly on the back end. If they end up trading Dee Ford (which would be stupid) then edge rusher becomes a larger priority.

30. Green Bay Packers (from New Orleans) select: Jaylon Ferguson (Edge, Louisiana Tech)
2nd Mock: Irv Smith Jr. (TE, Alabama)
1st Mock (trade with San Francisco): Mack Wilson (LB, Alabama)

I had Green Bay going with offense at #12, but now edge rusher gets addressed. Ferguson set an NCAA record with 45 sacks, plays with a high motor, and is a great fit for a 3-4 defense like Green Bay.

31. Los Angeles Rams select: Taylor Rapp (S, Washington)
2nd Mock (trade with Arizona): Noah Fant (TE, Iowa)
1st Mock: Brian Burns (Edge, Florida State)

Joyner is a free agent as the team decided not to franchise tag him again. They did add Eric Weddle to replace him, but Rapp gives them more youth, upside, and could play alongside Weddle and spark this defense.

32. Arizona Cardinals (via trade with New England) select: Andre Dillard (OT, Washington State)
2nd Mock (trade with Miami): Daniel Jones (QB, Duke)
1st Mock: Christian Wilkins (DT, Clemson)

No, this trade is not due to New England trading back as they typically do. This is a sneaky prediction based on Josh Rosen. Arizona will want to deal Rosen in order to make way for Murray, but will want a first or high second in exchange. New England needs a future replacement for Brady with Jimmy now with the 49ers. This is a good scenario for both sides. Arizona beefs up the offensive line here with Dillard, who can be a great left tackle for years to come. This would also assist Kyler Murray and create better lanes for David Johnson.

Second Round:

33. Arizona Cardinals select: Jeffery Simmons (DL, Mississippi State)

34. Indianapolis Colts (from New York Jets) select: Parris Campbell (WR, Ohio State)

35. Oakland Raiders select: Deionte Thompson (S, Alabama)

36. San Francisco 49ers select: Garrett Bradbury (C, NC State)

37. New York Giants select: Johnathan Abram (S, Mississippi State)

38. Jacksonville Jaguars select: N’Keal Harry (WR, Arizona State)

39. Cincinnati Bengals (via trade with Tampa Bay) select: Dexter Lawrence (DT, Clemson)

40. Carolina Panthers (via trade with Buffalo) select: Trayvon Mullen (CB, Clemson)

41. Denver Broncos select: Nasir Adderley (S, Delaware)

42. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (via trade with Cincinnati) select:

43. Detroit Lions select: Jachai Polite (Edge, Florida)

44. Green Bay Packers select: Mack Wilson (LB, Alabama)

45. Atlanta Falcons select: Chris Lindstrom (G, Boston College)

46. Washington Redskins select: Miles Boykin (WR, Notre Dame)

47. Buffalo Bills (via trade with Carolina) select: Erik McCoy (C, Texas A&M)

48. Detroit Lions (via trade with Miami) select: Rock Ya-Sin (CB, Temple)

49. Cleveland Browns select: Hakeem Butler (WR, Iowa State)

50. Minnesota Vikings select: Dre’Mont Jones (DT, Ohio State)

51. Tennessee Titans select: Kelvin Harmon (WR, NC State)

52. Pittsburgh Steelers select: Joe Giles-Harris (LB, Duke)

53. Philadelphia Eagles (from Baltimore) select: Amani Oruwariye (CB, Penn State)

54. Houston Texans (from Seattle) select: Damien Harris (RB, Alabama)

55. Houston Texans select: Juan Thornhill (S, Virginia)

56. New England Patriots (from Chicago) select: Zach Allen (DT, Boston College)

57. Philadelphia Eagles select: Jerry Tillery (DT, Notre Dame)

58. Dallas Cowboys select: Deebo Samuel (WR, South Carolina)

59. Indianapolis Colts select: Julian Love (CB, Notre Dame)

60. Los Angeles Chargers select: Derrick Brown (DT, Auburn)

61. Kansas City Chiefs select: Dalton Risner (G, Kansas State)

62. New Orleans Saints select: Will Grier (QB, West Virginia)

63. Kansas City Chiefs (from Los Angeles Rams) select: Oshane Ximines (Edge, Old Dominion)

64. New England Patriots select: JJ Arcega-Whiteside (WR, Stanford)

So there is our third take on the first round, and our first second round mock of the offseason. When free agency hits this week, it will massively alter some needs and picks, and we could have some trades in the upcoming month (in addition to the ones we’ve already had). Stay tuned!
