I'M BACK!!!
After a wonderful vacation with my wife, I am back and ready to blog. I actually tried to blog Wednesday about the ongoing baseball season but the Internet malfunctioned at my resort and it didn't work. What was I paying for exactly?
Anyways, Greg and I have combined our talents are taking them to this site today for a joint blog. We're making our predictions on some great things this weekend.
1. NBA Playoffs
Are you kidding me Lebron James? After losing three straight, the Heat responded last night with a butt whipping of the C's. Lebron was the guy we remembered from Cleveland as he poured in 40+ in the first three quarters basically wrapping it up. If only he played that focused and mad all the time... As we head into this weekend, all eyes are on Game 7 Saturday:
Greg - As I predicted prior to Game 6, Miami won on the road. Miami will win Game 7 at home. Boston has played great to this point but this is where their run ends. Miami (namely the real Big 1 in LeBron) are too talented and will pull it out just like last year in the Eastern Conference Finals. I say this with great pain, as I would love to see the Celtics pull this out, but you have to admit, an OKC/Miami Finals is much more compelling than an OKC/Boston series.
Teaser Alert - OKC will win the finals in five games!
Andrew - While I agree that Miami will win Game 7, I want to point out that it won't be easy. The Heat rolled last night, even on the road, but Saturday will be different. Boston has too much experience and talent themselves to just lay down. I expect Pierce, Garnett, and Rondo to bounce back. Will Ray Allen show up cause he hasn't all series... Probably not. But when it's all said and done, the Heat will move on to play the Thunder is a series the whole world wants to see.
Teaser Alert - OKC will win the finals in seven games!
2. French Open - Men's Singles
The semifinals are today and the final is on Sunday. It should be exciting tennis. We're left with the clear top three players in the world (and maybe of all time?) and a fighter in Ferrer.
Djokovic is trying to win to complete the "Joker Slam" and would hold all the major trophies at the same time. Nadal is trying to continue his dominance here and pass Borg and win more French Open's than any player in history. Federer is trying to win his second title here, getting ready for the Olympics (which he wants to win badly), and is wanting to get back to number one in the world. Ferrer is the unspoken player but is trying to win his first grand slam title. Here's how we see it:
Greg - Djokovic and Federer could be the match of the tournament. They are fairly evenly matched. Fed ended Djokovic's 41 match winstreak last year in this round of this tournament. Novak returned the favor by coming back on Fed at the US Open to knock him out. I think Djokovic will take the match in five sets. Ferrer will give Nadal a fight but ultimately lose in four sets.
In the final it will set up the dream final of 1 vs. 2. Djokovic owned Nadal last year but this year is different. Nadal just topped him a few weeks ago in a final on clay. It will be the same here. Nadal in straight sets.
Andrew - I can't wait for the Roger and Novak match. It should be great tennis and has the chance to go the distance. I am torn. I am rooting for Roger and think that he is playing well enough to win. They both had scares in the quarters so they are on equal footing. In my French Open preview I said Novak would win. In order to keep my integrity, I'll stick with the Joker winning in four (but Go Team Fed). The other match is interesting because Ferrer has the skill and fight to make it interesting. But Nadal seems to get better as the tourney goes on. I'll take Nadal is straight sets.
I agree with Greg that Nadal has figured some things out against Djokovic. That's what great players do. I also think Djokovic will have had the tougher semifinal. In order to be different than Greg though I'll take Nadal in four sets as opposed to three.
3. French Open - Women's Singles
Was this the matchup you thought pre-tourney... Sharapova vs. Errani? Nonetheless, it should be a good one. Maria is the newly minted top player in the world, an amazing feet for coming off shoulder surgery. In fact, if she wins she will become the first player ever to win a grand slam after such surgery. Also, she would complete the career grand slam by winning her first French Open. Errani on the other hand is the first player outside the top 20 to get here in quite sometime. She is talented on clay, winning three titles on this surface already. But this is her first slam final so can she deal with the pressure?
Andrew and Greg - Errani won't hang with the bigger hitter in Sharapova. Maria wants this more, will work harder, handle the pressure better, and dictate all the points. Maria wins in straight sets.
4. Golf
Before we discuss this week, can you believe the pairings they announced for the US Open next week? Unbelievable! Tiger, Phil, and Bubba makes me want to quit my job, buy tickets, and go out to watch every second. Not to mention Rory, Donald, and Westwood; the top three players in the world. Kuchar is in a great group too, and US sensation Rickie Fowler is playing with Ryo who is a sensation on the other side of the globe. We'll break down this tourney next week but I can't wait!!!
Greg-I really can't believe the pairing for the first two rounds, its going to be great. I watched the ESPN sneak peak of Olympic club yesterday and I believe it will be a relatively close to par tournament. The only two par 5 holes are back to back on the back 9 (15 &16 I believe) and 15 is a monster 670 yard par 5 that almost no one will birdie. With really only one legitimate chance in 18 holes to get to the green in 2 on a par 5, I see the scores sticking close to par, which will favor fairway hitters, GIR guys, and solid 10-15 foot putters. Who's going to have the hottest putter? We shall see.
As for this week, the Fedex St. Jude Classic began yesterday. Greg likes David Toms, the cagey veteran. I'm taking a flyer and going with Jeff Overton. He's from Indiana and I want to give him some love. He exploded onto the scene a couple years ago making the US Ryder Cup team, and playing well there. Maybe he'll do it again this year.
5-6. Soccer
Euro 2012 Pool Play and Elimination Rounds
On the other side of the world, football is king...not that football but (futbol)soccer! As we kick off the Euro 2012, we'll pick both pool play survivors and then the Elimination Rounds.
Group A: Greece, Russia, Czech Republic, Poland
Greg: Greece and Poland
Andrew: Poland and Czech Republic
Group B: Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Denmark
Greg: Germany, Netherlands
Andrew: Sorry Ronaldo...Germany, Netherlands
Group C: Spain, Italy, Ireland, Croatia
Greg: Spain, Croatia
Andrew: Spain, Ireland
Group D: England, France, Sweden, Ukraine
Greg: England, France
Andrew: France, England
Quarters:
Greg: Netherlands over Poland, Spain over England, Germany over Greece, Croatia over France
Andrew: Poland over Netherlands, Spain over England, Germany over Czech Republic, France over Ireland
Semis:
Greg: Germany over Croatia, Netherlands over Spain
Andrew: Spain over Poland, Germany over France
Finals:
Greg: Netherlands over Germany
Andrew: Germany over Spain (wanted to pick Spain but they can't win everything can they?)
So there you have it. Lots of stuff upcoming. Not to mention baseball season is ongoing which is always fun during the summer. Glad to back and talking sports again. Enjoy the weekend!
Andrew

Greg's Weekend Super 6
Coming into this weekend there are some major headlines:
1. NBA Conference Finals - I'm not sure what else Boston could have done in Game 2, and they still lost. Rondo played the best game I've seen any player play in the postseason so far, but the Celtics seem to take plays off on defense, which allowed the Heat to get back into the game. If Boston can somehow muster some energy after the back-breaking game 2 loss, this series will go 5 games, if not the Heat might win game 4 by 30.
In the Western Conference-The Thunder have actually played pretty well in this series so far, but only have one game to show for it. Thabo Sefolosha won't be able to keep up his level of scoring in game 4, but still think OKC manages to win game 4.I'm with Andrew and THINK the Spurs can close it out in 5, but am actually predicting that it goes 7 after last night, with the Spurs clinching it on their home floor.
2. Stanley Cup - Game 1 was hard to watch hockey, and the Devils played fairly poorly. The Devils bounce back and Kovalchuk and Elias each score en route to a 4-2 Devils win. Andrew's prediction follows the pattern of Game 1 too closely. I feel it will be a much more wide open game.
3. The Memorial - Plenty of players in contention after day 1 at the Memorial, and Rory and Tiger both played well for the first time in a few tournaments. Rory looks as though he'll finally not miss a cut, and Tiger salvaged a good round after being all over the course.
I'm going with an upset pick this weekend as I think Mark Wilson will come out on top. He's not long, but he's pretty consistent, a poor man's Luke Donald, if you will. This course suits him well, and his putter gets hot. He wins by 2 shots.
4. The Start of Fantasy Football - I also signed up to start fantasy football this weekend as well, but I won't be doing any mock drafts so soon. I think its pointless because there are so many question marks. Any draft you do this early basically has no relevance.
I've started some controversy this season by naming my team "THE Tebow Hater" changed up from "Jerry Jones' Greed" last season when I was the league champion, something my esteemed colleague Andrew has yet to achieve. My team will be full of talent and hopefully my fantasy QB will be able to throw better passes than Tim Tebow.
5. French Open - On the women's side there is one black female still in the draw, and thank God its not one of the Williams' sisters. Sloane Stevens advanced to the 4th round today with a 6-3,6-2 over Frenchwoman Mathilde Johannson. Good story, and the fact that the Williams' sisters are out makes it better.
Nadal is demolishing people, and I don't see him being challenged legitimately until the QF. Andy Murray is dealing with some back pain, but still pulled through and is into the 3rd Round. Federer isn't playing as smoothly as he'd like. Currently he's locked in a close 4th set with Nicolas Mahut (coincidentally, Mahut's wife is actually rooting for Federer, how's that for marital strife?). Still can't pick against Nadal.
6. International Soccer - Euro 2012 kicks off this weekend, and the defending champs Spain have to be the favorites again. The best soccer in the world is played in Europe and this tournament should be fun to watch.
I agree with Andrew that the game with Canada shouldn't be a challenge for the US team. They should win by at least 2 goals.

Andrew's Weekend Super 6
Coming into this weekend there are some major headlines:
1. NBA Conference Finals - In the Eastern Conference, Miami holds the 2-0 edge, but Boston was right there in Game 2. In Game 3, Boston will play well, Pierce won't foul out, and the C's will make this a series by winning. With that momentum, Boston will hold serve by winning Game 4 as well.
In the Western Conference, OKC stopped the Spurs streak. The Thunder have a great home court advantage and slowed down San Antonio's offense. Will they win Game 4 to level the series... no! The Spurs will take Game 4, then close them out in Game 5 at home. They are too good as a team, Tony Parker is too good as an individual, and they have the best coach in the game.
2. Stanley Cup - The Kings won yet another road game to start the finals. Their run in this year's playoffs has been extraordinary (as I said in my blog yesterday). Game 2 will be a pivotal game though. If the Kings go up 2-0 taking both road games, the series is basically over. If the Devils can win, they have a chance to steal back home ice advantage by splitting in LA.
I think the Kings will continue their run of destiny. They are 13-2 in the playoffs so far, 9-0 on the road. They continue that streak by taking Game 2 by the score of 3-2. They will score their game winner with about ten minutes to go. How's that for a prediction?
3. The Memorial - On Thursday, Tiger and Rory put themselves in contention. Can they fight it out this weekend... no and yes. One of them will be right up there come Sunday, but one will fall back. I don't think either will win however.
Adam Scott shot a solid round in Round 1. He has been quiet for a while, but seems to show up in big events like these. He will find the magic with his belly putter and pull it out in an exciting Sunday finish. This will really prepare him nicely for the US Open which is only weeks away. He would love to win his first major.
4. The Start of Fantasy Football - You may be thinking, what is he talking about? Starting today (June 1), many sites opened up their fantasy football leagues. That means people will be signing up, starting to research, and will be practicing drafting through the mocks. I play on Yahoo so that's where I'll be.
The interesting thing about fantasy football this year is that there are so many question marks. There are some contract situations. There are tons of guys coming back from injuries, some large. There are faces in new places. There are 2-back teams vs. 1-back teams. There are chemistry problems potentially with receivers. And there are rookies that could be great or be busts in fantasy. Of course, this weekend isn't the time to worry about that.
5. French Open - The second slam in tennis reaches it's midpoint this weekend. On the women's side, things have been weird. They have seen the 3, 5, and 8 seed lose already, including Serena who was 17-0 on clay entering the event. Sharapova, who hasn't ever been good on clay, is playing amazing and has a chance to win. Of course, my pick Stosur is quietly moving on through too. Should be fun this weekend as the match-ups get much tougher at this point.
On the men's side, it's the same old stories. The top seeds are moving through. The Americans stink and are already out. Nadal looks unbeatable. And there are some up and comers who look promising but won't do anything. The good thing about this though is that we're due for some amazing matches soon. We will see the best play the best and it should be fun.
6. International Soccer - Across the globe teams have been playing friendly's in preparation for Olympics, World Cup Qualifying, etc. The US looked great a week ago but struggled Wednesday. On Sunday they take on Canada.
Coming off that spirited yet sloppy loss to Brazil, I expect the US to clean things up. I plan on seeing most of our tops guns play, and play well. I expect the US to score around three times and I plan on the defense tightening up and possibly getting the shutout. Either way, it's fun to talk about the US Soccer team again in a positive light.
Be sure to check out these events and the other sports that are happening this weekend. Feel free to comment with your own predictions. That's what friends do!

Andrew's Weekend Super 6
Heading into Memorial Day Weekend there are some major story lines in the sports world. I'll preview the weekend and make my predictions in my weekend Super 6:
1. NBA Playoffs - On Saturday we'll watch an exciting Game 7 between Philly and Boston. The winner gets the Miami Heat who finished off the Pacer's last night. Although the Sixers are coming off a great win a couple days ago, I'll still give Boston the edge. The C's are playing at home and have an experience advantage with Rondo, Allen, Pierce, and Garnett. I say the "Big 4" play well and control the game. Rondo will flirt with a triple double, Allen will hit at least three 3's, Pierce will score 25+, and Garnett will have a double double. C's by 12.
In the Western Conference, fans are getting hyped for the start of the Spurs/Thunder series. I too believe it could be an extremely entertaining series and can't wait until Sunday night. I'm taking the Spurs in the series and will take them Sunday night also. They are playing well right now and will continue their winning ways. Tony Parker (not Durant or Westbrook) will be the best player. He'll go off for over 30 points and Spurs will pull away late to win by 9.
2. NHL Playoffs - All eyes are on the Eastern Conference Finals to see who will face the red-hot Kings for the Stanley Cup. Many believe the Rangers can level the series and send it to a Game 7... not me. The Devils will protect their home ice and Brodeur will play great in goal. Devils will win 2-1 in OT. The Kings will find out who they will play after tonight.
3. USA Soccer - New"ish" coach Klinsmann has gotten the defense playing well. And coming off their shutout upset at Italy a few months ago, expectations are building. My worry is the offense. I am still waiting for things to click and for the US to find some weapons outside of Dempsey.
Saturday, the US hosts Scotland in an International Friendly. As they continue to ramp up to World Cup Qualifying, I expect the Americans to find a way to win in a low scoring affair. I'll stick with the score that has become the norm: 1-0.
4. Weekend Baseball - In the NL, my eyes are drawn to the two top teams in the NL East when the Nationals head to Atlanta for some weekend fun. Although the Braves just got swept by the Reds over the last four days, these teams have started the season strong. These are the types of series that may have an impact in the standings coming down the stretch. Expect to see good pitching, timely hitting, and the series to come down the Sunday's matchup. The Braves will win the series though after Brandon Beachy pitches a gem on Sunday.
In the AL, I'll also go east again and focus on the Rays/Red Sox series. It's the Red Sox who are in last place currently and need a good showing this weekend. I'll be bold and predict that Boston sweeps Tampa Bay. This will be the weekend Boston breaks lose and makes a move in the standings. Couple this with the Celtics win and it will be a good weekend in Beantown.
5. How about a little golf. The main story line personally is that I am playing 27 holes Monday with my family. But, as I mentioned in my golf blog yesterday, the Crowne Plaza is going on at Colonial. I went with Zach Johnson (who leads after round 1 actually) and Greg went with Jason Dufner (who sits 1 back in second place). We'll see what happens this weekend though as it's been a crazy year on the PGA Tour. My guess is that whatever happens, it will once again be exciting.
6. The second slam in tennis starts this weekend as well (French Open). Novak Djokovic is the top seed, and with the win he would hold all four major trophies (Australian in January, Wimbledon and US Open in 2011). For now I'll just say that it may be a Spaniard who is celebrating at the end of the tournament, but stay tuned for a full French Open Preview this weekend.
Lastly, I hope everyone has a great weekend. But let us not forget why we celebrate this weekend (and get a day off of work Monday). I want to say thank you to all of the military that are currently serving across the globe, and thank you to the veterans who have served before. My thoughts are also with the men and women who have lost their lives serving to protect this country. My prayers go out to all of them, and their families this weekend. God bless!
