Wimbledon Recap

After an exciting weekend, The Championships of Wimbledon is now behind us. We saw great tennis for two straight weeks, and a number of great storylines that went with the play. Below is a recap of those stories that we will always remember from this tournament.

- More records for Roger Federer: Today, the world watched Federer defeat Andy Murray to win the Gentlemen's Singles Title. This 7th Wimbledon title tied Roger with Pete Sampras for most all-time. This extended Fed's all-time record for most slams to 17. This win also got Federer back to number 1 in the world. He will tie Sampras this week for most weeks at that spot, but he will pass Pistol Pete a week later. This win ultimately gave more evidence and proof that Roger indeed is the best player of all time.

- The Serena Sweep: A 30 year old like Fed, Serena Williams, won the Women's Singles Title. Just like Roger, she has owned Wimbledon (along with her sister). This was her 14th slam of all-time, 3rd best ever. She has fought back from injuries time and time again, but this time was impressive to me. She also won the doubles' title with her sister Venus. Not bad for one fortnight in London.

- Great Britain's Title Chance: Finally a Brit won Wimbledon...in doubles (Marray). But once again, G.B.'s effort to win their single's title fell short. Andy Murray made the final and became the first English player to make the final since 1938. Murray even won the first set there, before losing to Roger. I felt for him when he broke down in tears after the match, but his time may come eventually.

- Nadal Loses Early: Possibly the match of the tournament came in the first week when Lukas Rosol took down mighty Rafa. It was probably the most flawless final set of tennis I have ever watched. Rosol truly deserved to win that match, but then he lost the next match he played.

- The Roof: All the players have their opinion of the new roof over Centre Court. Some people think it makes a massive difference for the players. It had an effect this week influencing that Nadal upset, Fed's comeback against Benneteau, and the men's semis and final. Many of the women's matches also took place with the roof closed. The decisions made on when to close it and when to leave it open baffled many. Needless to say, there are still come kinks that need worked out.

- Olympic's Preview: With the Summer Games in London, the medals in tennis will be awarded on Centre Court. These last couples weeks showed us what to expect. We know who the contenders are and who won't compete well on the grass.

- Parity: For a long time the women's game was dominated by the same people. Recently the men's game has been. This year, there has been a different slam champion for the men and women in all 3 slams. Can anybody get a second slam title in 2012 at the US Open?

So there you have the main stories. American stories I liked were Sloane Stephens, Christina McHale, Sam Querrey and Brian Baker. As we head into the US Open Series and the Olympics, I am excited about the state of the game. I can't wait to watch what unfolds over the next two months. If you like tennis, this is a fun time!
