It’s been a month or so since the season began. There are
some surprises for sure, but others are doing what we expected. Here’s a look
at how they stack up to this point:
MLB Power Rankings – April 28, 2014
1. Milwaukee Brewers (18-7) – Best record in the league, in
large part because of their impressive 9-1 record on the road. K-Rod has been
terrific as the closer, leading the league with 11 saves.
1A. Atlanta Braves (17-7) – The Braves have been nearly as
impressive, thanks to their elite pitching. They’ve only allowed 58 runs, which
is twenty less than the next best team (St. Louis). That gives them the second
best run differential in baseball.
3. Oakland Athletics (15-10) – The team that leads the
league in run differential is Oakland (+38). Few teams are scoring more than
Oakland, and they are tied for the most road wins in the league right now (9).
4. San Francisco Giants (15-10) – San Francisco is one of
the more balanced teams in the league right now with good pitching and offense
both.
5. Washington Nationals (14-12) – Washington has been great
against every team except Atlanta. Strasburg has started slow, but I expect
he’ll pick it up.
6. Detroit Tigers (12-9) – The Tigers haven’t played as many
games as other teams, but they’ve been good, not great, so far. I’m waiting on
Miggy to return to form soon.
7. St. Louis Cardinals (14-12) – The defending champs have
been terrific from the mound, but haven’t produced as many runs as normal. In
fact, they are scoring less than most teams in the league.
8. Texas Rangers (15-10) – The Rangers have been a little up
and down, but they are 7-3 in their last ten games. They have the third best
record in the league (4-way tie).
9. New York Yankees (15-10) – The Yankees are another team
standing at 15-10, but they’ve been wildly inconsistent. In fact, they are the
only team in the top 13 (record wise) with a negative run differential. Tanaka
has been excellent though.
10. Colorado Rockies (14-12) – As they do seemingly every
year, the Rockies have been scoring a lot of runs. They are second in the
league in total runs scored. That helps deliver wins.
11. Los Angeles Dodgers (14-12) – If the Dodgers could win
at home (6-9), they’d be even better than they are now. My guess is that
they’ll get better throughout the year.
12. New York Mets (14-11) – The Mets are one of the surprise
teams this season. They are fairly healthy, which hasn’t been the case in
recent years, and have been fairly good on both sides of the ball.
13. Chicago White Sox (13-13) – Hopefully you’ve heard of
Jose Abreu by now, as he’s tearing up every rookie hitting record. Too bad I
don’t own him in fantasy.
14. Los Angeles Angels (11-13) – Mike Trout has been good,
but the return of Albert Pujols (return to form that is) has really helped the
Angels so far.
15. Cincinnati Reds (11-14) – Despite a questionable record,
the Reds have been fairly solid this season. The pithing has been awesome, but
they need to produce more run support.
16. Philadelphia Phillies (13-12) – Haven’t played near as
many home games as road games, yet have managed to win 13 thus far. Not bad a
team in a slight rebuild.
17. Minnesota Twins (12-11) – This is the last team on this
list with a winning record. They’ve been another surprise team in my opinion.
18. Kansas City Royals (12-12) – They’ve been better
pitching than hitting, so if the bats can wake up they’ll get rolling.
19. Baltimore Orioles (12-12) – Haven’t heard much out of
Chris Davis, one of the reasons they’re only .500.
20. Boston Red Sox (12-14) – You know fans of the Sox aren’t
too happy right now, and they shouldn’t be. Better pitching is what this team
needs.
21. Miami Marlins (11-14) – Miami hasn’t been too bad this
season, but they haven’t figured out how to win on the road (2-10).
22. Toronto Bluejays (12-13) – Haven’t played great of late
(4-6 in last ten), but have the talent to turn it around.
23. Tampa Bay Rays (11-14) – One of the most disappointments
in the league is this one, but I’ll let it slide because they always play
better throughout the year.
24. Seattle Mariners (10-14) – I wonder if Cano enjoys his
new team? I bet he hates the losing, although Seattle isn’t too far back at
this point.
25. Cleveland Indians (11-14) – Very poor hitting at times
have doomed the Indians.
26. Pittsburgh Pirates (10-16) – Fans are livid with the
start of their beloved Pirates. McCutcheon better pick it up!
27. San Diego Padres (12-14) – Don’t let their record fool
you, this team isn’t good. They’ve scored a league low 69 runs this season, 16
fewer than the next lowest team.
28. Chicago Cubs (8-16) – I really don’t believe the talent
is that far below other teams, but they aren’t using it effectively at all.
29. Houston Astros (9-17) – The Astros have the second worst
run differential (-46) of any team in the majors and have scored the second
fewest runs.
30. Arizona Diamondbacks (8-20) – Worst record in baseball
and -59 in run differential. Enough said.

Pretty sure I jinxed Atlanta, who haven't won a game since these rankings came out!
