NFL Power Rankings
After Week 6
NOTE: Previous ranking is noted in the first parenthesis,
record in second parenthesis.
1. (2) Denver Broncos (4-1) – I doubted myself and moved
Denver off the 1-line last week only to put them back on top now. The offense
is obviously solid, but I see vast improvement on defense this season.
2. (7) Dallas Cowboys (5-1) – Could be a little premature
and I could be over-ranking them based on one win, but winning at Seattle is
impressive. They are also on top (tied) of the entire NFC right now, which says
a lot in that loaded conference.
3. (3) San Diego Chargers (5-1) – The Chargers, not Broncos,
are winning the AFC West and the entire AFC at this point. But they have had a
soft schedule and were nearly exposed yesterday by Oakland. I need to see them
beat Denver first (or even KC) before I believe.
4. (4) Indianapolis Colts (4-2) – After starting 0-2, they
have won four straight, have taken over the division lead, and their offense
has been terrific in the process. Andrew Luck is a legit candidate for MVP
right now. Their defense is also playing well, as they are close to the
league-lead in sacks.
5. (1) Seattle Seahawks (3-2) – Just as I started believing
in Russell Wilson and this group of guys, they lose at home. They can’t stop
the run consistently, and on offense they lack playmakers outside of the big 3
(Wilson, Lynch, Harvin).
6. (5) Green Bay Packers (4-2) – Barely escaped Miami with a
win, but Aaron Rodgers proved once again why he’s incredibly clutch and one of
the best QB’s in the league. I knew they’d score on that final drive the entire
time.
7. (6) San Francisco 49ers (4-2) – Despite a slow start last
night, San Francisco took it to St. Louis. They seem to be clicking on both
sides of the ball, and have now won three games in a row.
8. (8) Philadelphia Eagles (5-1) – They haven’t been as
impressive as Dallas, but they are right there at 5-1 as well. Their shutout of
a hot Giants team took a great effort, and we finally saw McCoy running wild.
Foles leads the league in turnovers though, so that’s worth watching.
9. (10) Arizona Cardinals (4-1) – Carson Palmer’s return was
a timely surprise, and just what the doctor ordered. If he stays healthy, we’ll
see the wins continue to pile up. Floyd and Fitz will put up better stats too.
10. (11) New England Patriots (4-2) – How they were only
favored by a point against Buffalo is mind-boggling to me. Brady is looking
better by the week.
11. (9) Cincinnati Bengals (3-1-1) – An easy FG would have
sealed a win, but instead they’ll have to deal with a dreaded tie the entire
season.
11. (12) Carolina Panthers (3-2-1) – Cam Newton looked like
the guy we used to love due to his elite running ability. Over 100 yards on the
ground is impressive for a QB. They too will have to live with a tie however.
13. (13) Baltimore Ravens (4-2) – Blowing out Tampa Bay
looked fun, but it wasn’t difficult. I can’t reward them too much for that
expected result.
14. (15) Detroit Lions (4-2) – They won a game without
Megatron, something they may have to do a couple more times. The good news is
that their defense continues to play at an elite level.
15. (18) Chicago Bears (3-3) – Another baffling performance
by Chicago, this time in a good way. They continue to play hot and cold, but in
this game they looked solid on both sides of the ball.
16. (24) Cleveland Browns (3-2) – It’s time to pay attention
to the Cleveland Browns. They are above .500 and just blitzed Pittsburgh. The
running attack looks great, and Hoyer is doing just enough. If they hold out
long enough, remember they will add Josh Gordon again this season. Losing Alex
Mack will hurt though.
17. (14) New York Giants (3-3) – Getting shutout on SNF is
embarrassing, but even worse was losing Victor Cruz for the year. No more salsa
dancing for him!
18. (19) Kansas City Chiefs (2-3) – They move up a spot
because some teams that played looked pathetic.
19. (21) New Orleans Saints (2-3) – What I said about KC applies
to New Orleans as well.
20. (16) Pittsburgh Steelers (3-3) – Pittsburgh continues to
be mediocre, capable of looking good, but also playing terrible at times too.
Getting blown out to Cleveland has to make their fans furious.
21. (17) Buffalo Bills (3-3) – Their defense really let them
down against New England, but their offense isn’t anything to write home about
either. Just another long season I think in Buffalo.
22. (20) Atlanta Falcons (2-4) – The slide continues for
Atlanta, as they lost a rare home game this week. Nothing positive really
happened in the game either, but at least nobody in the division is playing
well.
23. (22) Houston Texans (3-3) – Houston looked atrocious
early against the Colts, but JJ Watt nearly brought them back. He’s a defensive
player, yet he’s scored 3 TD’s this year…
24. (23) Miami Dolphins (2-3) – Inspired effort against
Green Bay, but they came up short in the end. Instead of mid-teen ranking, they
are back here with the losers.
25. (25) Minnesota Vikings (2-4) – Teddy was back, but he
was overwhelmed by a great Detroit defense. Next week against Buffalo should be
a little easier.
26. (30) Tennessee Titans (2-4) – A blocked punt preserved
their win over Jacksonville. It’s sad that at home it took something like that
to get a win.
27. (26) Washington Redskins (1-5) – Remember when we all
fell in love with Cousins, well he’s now 0-4 as a starter.
28. (27) New York Jets (1-5) – Geno played decent in my
opinion, but they had no chance against the powerhouse Broncos. The offensive
line is killing them.
29. (29) St. Louis Rams (1-4) – They seemed to be in control
for most of the first half last night. Then the rest of the game happened…
30. (28) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-5) – Wow, that was ugly!
That is all.
31. (31) Jacksonville Jaguars (0-6) – They were so close to
winning that game, but it didn’t happen. How long will they have to wait?
32. (32) Oakland Raiders (0-5) – Carr played well and
Oakland nearly pulled off a big upset. But just like Jacksonville, they
couldn’t get it done.
