Hoosier Recruiting

The most discussed team in college basketball for most of 2013 across the nation and on this site was the Indiana Hoosiers. They potentially could have been again next year until they lost Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller to the NBA this week. Who will take their place and how good will those players be? Below is a link and our analysis on the incoming recruiting classes that is one of the best in the nation.

Collin Hartman

Andrew - Hartman is a guy that I don't think will play much until potentially late in his career. He can shoot it but that's all at this point. If he works hard though, he could play a role in his upperclassmen years.

Greg - Based on watching his tape, he seems to be a slightly less athletic/better shooting version of Derek Elston. His body needs to fill out, as all of these guys' bodies do, but he should be a valuable member of the bench to play 6-10 minutes/game over the next few seasons.

Devin Davis Jr

Andrew - I've seen this guy play in person and he reminds me of a taller AJ Moye. What I mean by that is he has an inside players game in more of a guard/small forward body. He can rebound and finish well for his size, but needs a better handle to play his position better. Could improve shooting as well. I see him similar to Hartman; meaning he won't have a role until later in his career.

Greg - Was not impressed watching his tape. He plays below the rim for a guy that is 6'6" and is noticeably out of shape in all the tape that I have watched him. He is slow footed for his size and lacks athleticism.  I'm not sure he'll see any playing time at IU. Reminds me of a 6'6" version of Peter Jurkin.

Luke Fischer

Andrew - Many say that he reminds people of Cody Zeller. He won't be as good immediately but could grow into that caliber of player. He possesses good footwork and a solid knowledge of the game. He beat out some good players to win Mr. Basketball in Wisconsin. He believe he will start as a freshman since Zeller declared.

Greg - Is a near clone of Cody Zeller. Is not as polished offensively and needs to grow into his body but plays well around the basket. Defends and rebounds extremely well and spaces the floor well for a big man. May have some injury history that bears watching.

Stanford Robinson

Andrew - He is a guy that makes an impact all over the court. He can defend, score, pass, rebound, and lead. Due to that, I see him filling the Oladipo role. He won't as good initially (as Oladipo was this past year) but could bloom into that in a year or so. He will compete with Remy Abell for the other starting guard spot opposite Yogi.

Greg - Explosive athlete. Somewhat polished offensively but relies too heavily on athleticisim defensively. Plays above the rim at 6'4" and has a decent build for a high school senior. He's going to fit in the Victor Oladipo mold, and how good he can be will be determined by how hard he wants to work.

Troy Williams

Andrew - He will be a stud. He will have an impact in year one, especially if he adds a little weight in the offseason. Depending on his development, he could be an NBA player after two or three seasons. I think he'll play off the bench initially and be one of our "sixth or seventh starters" as Crean often calls them.

Greg - Polished, well-rounded player at both ends of the floor. Dominates the game when he wants to with his offense and defense. Scores with ease, and has a well-developed jumpshot and one-on-one scoring game. Could be a one and done player. An impressive player. Is a more well-rounded version of Christian Watford, with more quickness and more aptitude at the defensive end of the floor.

Noah Vonleh

Andrew - The prize of the IU recruiting class, Vonleh was the only McDonald's All-American in the recruiting class. He is fairly big but has some serious skill outside. He will fill the Watford role and will start immediately as a freshman. With a good year, he could be a one and done player, although it likely could be two years like Zeller.

Greg - Gifted scorer. Not a player currently on IU's team that you can compare him to. He fits the Kevin Durant mold, as a long, skinny armed, scoring machine. Needs to add some bulk, but seems to play with strength it does not appear he has. Is not as impressive an athlete on tape as Williams is, but puts up better numbers and seemingly has a better basketball IQ.

  2. IU just announced that Remy Abell will transfer. This makes me believe Stanford Robinson will definitely start unless Maurice Creek miraculously gets back to his pre-injury form. That means that IU could be going with 3 freshmen starters (at least 2), plus a sophomore in Yogi, and senior in Sheehey. Times change...

  3. Vonleh and Williams played in the Jordan Brand Classic over the weekend, and it was Williams who this time impressed me the most. He seemed to be able to create points in bunches, particularly in the paint. Troy also played great defense and will be a factor on that end all year for Coach Crean. Vonleh has struggled shooting when I've watched him "live" but his size and ability to rebound is something I have been impressed with.

On a side note, Crean has offered a scholarship to Jaren Sina for 2013. Sina was committed to Northwestern but got a release due to a coaching change. He is a 4 star guard that could help IU now that Remy Abell is transferring. The problem is that IU is maxed out on scholarships for next season and this would again put them over the limit. Why does Crean like to oversign? Is somebody else transferring or is he not going to renew a scholarship?

  4. Another update: Sina signed with Seton Hall, Remy reconsidered transfer but is still going through with it. I tweeted Crean today and told him to go after Eli Carter, Rutgers leading scorer who was granted a release due to a coaching change. If Crean still wants to oversign, go after him!

Anyways, the Derby Classic took place last night. All of IU's recruits played except Vonleh... here are my thoughts:

Troy Williams was the MVP of this game and impressed me even more than in the Jordan Brand Classic. He has incredible athleticism (similar to Oladipo) that is used on defense and getting into the paint, but he can handle the ball and shoot it well. He will likely play more at guard than once thought, especially now that IU lost Abell. I think he is the prize of our class, even more than Vonleh.

Devin Davis was also impressive. He worked well with Troy, and rebounded very well for his size. He can't create his own offense, but is a good cutter and is scrappy. Reminds me of a young Will Sheehey, but with less upside. Nonetheless, I stand by my comments that he could help the Hoosiers in time.

Luke Fischer was the third Hoosier to score in double figures (along with the two above). He has a solid game that will translate well to the next level. He will contribute immediately but needs to bulk up. If he goes to campus early, that can be addressed.

Colin Hartman can shoot it and has a great stroke. He can provide some outside shooting off the bench and will be a nice spot-up shooter.

Stanford Robinson is an X-Factor. I've seen him look great other times before on both ends of the court. He was just okay last night though. He isn't a scorer, but sets up his teammates well and scores when necessary. He's a great defender though. He plays more like a point guard which he'll play some, but if he wants to come in and start, he'll have to play the 2-guard next to Yogi.

    That's all for now...
