NFL Power Rankings

It was an exciting week 2 in the football world. We saw game winning performances by guys like CJ Spiller, Eli Manning, and Reggie Bush. We saw losing performances by Jay Cutler, Chris Johnson, Peyton Manning, and the replacement refs. We saw exciting and controversial finishes in the Cardinals, Eagles, and Giants games. Plus, three more rookie QB's recorded their first wins (Luck, Wilson, Tannehill). It was a great week to watch football!

There were some shake-ups in the Power Rankings for sure. In fact, the top 4 teams in our rankings from last week all lost. On the flip side, the lowest ranked team last week (Miami) won big on Sunday. Now, there are a surplus of teams sitting at 1-1.

The biggest movers up the board were the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cincinnati Bengals. Both moved up nine spots after nice wins. Both were probably also ranked too low last week. The team that dropped the most was the Dallas Cowboys, who feel ten spots from 8 to 18. As impressive as they were last week, they were equally as bad this week. They were plenty of other teams though that moved up and down in large ways.

Note the picks standings below, along with our Power Rankings in full after week 2. Feel free to agree or disagree with our rankings in the comment section. Enjoy!

NFL Power Rankings
Week 2

Andrew – 171 Points (17-15)         Greg – 162 Points (17-15)
Evan Atkinson – 61 Points (8-8)

NOTE: Last week’s rank is noted in first parenthesis. Current team record noted in second parenthesis.

1. (5) San Francisco 49ers (2-0) – Holding Green Bay to 22 points was impressive. Following that up by holding the Lions to 19 points confirms that this defense is clearly at another level. – Andrew

2. (6) Atlanta Falcons (2-0) – Defense looked great in the first half, and they did just enough to hold on at home to beat the Broncos.  Michael Turner was busted earlier this morning with a DUI however, so that may affect their season if he is suspended for any length of time. - Greg

3. (7) Houston Texans (2-0) – They are seemingly playing at a different level than their opponents right now, as neither game they have played has been close at. Scary when you consider that Schaub hasn’t really gotten going yet. – Andrew

4. (11) Green Bay Packers (1-1) - Thoroughly dominated the Bears' offense. Still can play better, and will only get better the more they play this season. – Greg

5. (2) Denver Broncos (1-1) - Peyton looked out of sorts and the defense got no pressure on Matt Ryan in the loss last night. On a brighter note, Willis McGahee looks healthy and strong. He could have a great season. – Greg

6. (1) Baltimore Ravens (1-1) – Many think the Ravens got shafted by the replacement refs (who took away a clear touchdown), but they lost the game in other ways. They got away from Ray Rice in the second half, plus they didn’t take full advantage of Philly’s four turnovers. – Andrew

7. (16) Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) - Turned the ball over four times and still beat the Ravens at home.  Imagine what they could do if they didn't turn the ball over. – Greg

8. (12) Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) – This team will only get better as the season progresses and the running game picks up. Getting Mendenhall back will ensure that it happens. – Andrew

9. (13) San Diego Chargers (2-0) – They have started quickly, which they needed to do to have a shot to win the division. Defense looks great! – Greg

10. (17) Arizona Cardinals (2-0) – They have been the best team in football over the last 11 weeks dating back to last year going 9-2 in that span. Winning at New England proved they are for real despite apparent quarterback issues. – Andrew

11. (4) New England Patriots (1-1) - Arizona exposed some weaknesses, but Gostkowski still should've won the game for them. – Greg

12. (3) Chicago Bears (1-1) – The team I watched on Thursday night was the team I’ve watched the last couple years. Terrible play by the offensive line is killing them. Cutler went back to old habits too by chucking it off his back foot. – Andrew

13. (14) Detroit Lions (1-1) - After looking fairly pathetic against the Rams in week 1, they lost respectably to the 49ers in week 2.  It is fairly evident that they only have one playmaker at the skill positions though… Calvin Johnson. – Greg

14. (18) New York Giants (1-1) – We’ll walk away amazed by the effort of Eli Manning who threw for over 500 yards. But don’t forget it was his three interceptions that dug them a hole; plus, a defensive line that is no longer getting pressure on QBs. – Andrew

15. (9) Washington Redskins (1-1) – RGIII played well again despite his first career interception. But the defense struggled this week, and now they lost Orakpo and Carriker for the season. – Andrew

16. (10) New York Jets (1-1) - Not impressed at all.  This looks like the offense I expected from this team.  Utterly embarrassed by the Steelers.– Greg

17. (15) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-1) - Played well enough to win in the Meadowlands, but giving up 25 4th quarter points and 510 passing yards to Eli Manning did them in. Aqib Talib is seeing Hakeem Nicks in his nightmares. – Greg

18. (8) Dallas Cowboys (1-1) – Romo must hate playing in Seattle. Last time he was there he fumbled away a playoff win. This time, he and the Cowboys could have only wished to be in a position to win. – Andrew

19. (25) Seattle Seahawks (1-1) – Welcome to the winner’s circle Russell Wilson. It helped that Lynch entered into “Beast Mode” in the second half, but nice to see another rookie earn his first W. – Andrew

20. (29) Cincinnati Bengals (1-1) - I probably was a little too quick to judge them after last week, but they need to beat a good team before I move them any higher. – Greg

21. (23) St. Louis Rams (1-1) - Won their home opener for the first time in eight years, and looked impressive for the second straight week. - Greg

22. (30) Carolina Panthers (1-1) – An improved rushing attack was the key to a week 2 win. As long as they can continue that and play defense, Cam will continue to deliver victories. – Andrew

23. (28) Buffalo Bills (1-1) - This team is an enigma. Just when you expect them to fold, they rout the Chiefs, and just when you expect them to succeed they'll fall flat on their 'horns' again. – Greg

24. (27) Indianapolis Colts (1-1) – They showed us two things on Sunday. First, they are a young team that is learning how to win, and need to protect a lead better. Second, Andrew Luck has a bright future and showed it by his late drive. – Andrew

25. (21) Minnesota Vikings (1-1) - Have needed monumental comebacks both weeks so far, and couldn't really establish the run against the Colts, which is a huge concern. - Greg

26. (32) Miami Dolphins (1-1) – Reggie Bush played as if he was at USC. Tannehill improved also and was the third rookie QB to get his first win. They need those efforts in order to compete in the remaining 14 games. – Andrew

27. (19) New Orleans Saints (0-2) - They are scoring points just fine, but are making mistakes you'd expect to see from a much less experienced team.  Only three teams in NFL history have reached the super bowl after starting 0-2. – Greg

28. (20) Kansas City Chiefs (0-2) – I am positive that Alabama’s defense could have slowed the Bills down a bit more than the Chiefs did on Saturday. They look inept early on this season. – Andrew

29. (31) Cleveland Browns (0-2) - Looked much better than the previous week, and have been in both games they've played this year. Unfortunately they play in the AFC North, and have no shot of being competitive. – Greg

30. (24) Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) – I wonder if looking back they will regret not trading Jones-Drew and getting some key assets for the future. – Andrew

31. (22) Oakland Raiders (0-2) - Ashley Fox, this franchise still look revamped to you? Maybe they should try "revamping" over again. – Greg

32. (26) Tennessee Titans (0-2) – They are having issues running the ball, passing the ball, and keeping opponents from doing those on them. - Andrew
