Holiday Hoops Talk

The NBA season is nearly two months old (about 1/3 done), and it's been interesting this year. The East sucks even though it looked great on paper before the year started. The West is loaded, despite some disappointing teams like Memphis and the Lakers. Kobe and Rose are injured, Paul George is now an MVP candidate, and Reggie Jackson is the Thunder's new James Harden. Here are my answers to some big questions:

Who is the best team in the NBA?

I really do like the Pacers, but I'm going with the Thunder. The Pacers have better depth, defense, and teamwork, but stars win championships these days. And Kevin Durant/Russell Westbrook does more than an emerging Paul George. OKC has the best record in the league (currently), despite playing the sixth toughest schedule. This also includes a recent win over Indy (a blowout actually). Indy also dropped two straight games this week.

Who is the worst team in the NBA?

The team I now think has the inside track at the #1 overall pick is Philly. I'm giving them the edge slightly over Milwaukee. The Bucks have a chance now to improve since they have played most of this year without Knight and Ersan, two of their best players. Henson also continues to get better. So even though Milwaukee currently has the worst record, they'll end up better than Philly. The 76ers have the worst point differential in the league, and simply don't have enough firepower to compete on a nightly basis. They are actually looking to trade a few of their best players, so they could easily get worse too. Philly fans are also hoping I'm right.

Who is the league MVP right now?

I want to say somebody else so badly, but it's Lebron James. He's a MVP machine, and he's actually having a better and more efficient season this year than the last few. The Paul George buzz is dying out since Indy has started to lose, CP3 is no longer on his early season tear, and Kevin Durant is still the second best player in the league, as much as he hates that title.

Who will acquire Asik?

The Rockets kept Asik past their self-imposed deadline (yesterday), but it is still a certainty he'll be traded this year. And the team that will trade for him is Boston. Boston was the team that nearly pulled off the deal yesterday. It didn't go down because Houston wanted more. The problem is that I don't see any other team offering more. Asik is a solid defensive player, but a woeful offensive one. His salary gives him 15 million next year. Contenders don't have money to do that, and rebuilding teams don't want that big of a salary (especially with a loaded free agent class this summer). Houston wants to trade with Philly, but they'll be hesitant giving up their coveted picks to acquire a defensive big man when they already have one in Noel. So Boston will remain the best option and Houston will be forced to trade him there.

What should the Bulls do?

With Rose injured, Chicago is no longer a threat to compete for a championship this season. The question then is should they look to rebuild in this lost season, or not? If it were me, I'd trade Deng and Boozer (if possible) to acquire picks and young assets. Cleveland's Dion Waiters is a rumored name that makes perfect sense. Trading away these good players would also help them in the draft, for they would likely acquire a worse record and improve where they are picking at.

What should the Lakers do?

Kobe just got injured again, Gasol has been off and on the block, and they are falling further behind in the loaded Western Conference. Similar to Chicago, should they rebuild or not? Again, I'd look to the future. I'd try and free up money that could be spent this summer. I'd look to add draft picks that could provide them future stars (potentially) to replace your aging ones over the next couple of years. They already blew it by giving Kobe WAY too much money, so I hope they don't blow this opportunity to rebuild for the future. They should also hold Kobe out for as long as possible, not risking his health and helping the team's case for a higher draft pick.

Who will win the NBA Championship this year?

Miami. They are coasting now, but will be firing on all cylinders in June. They will pull off the three-peat. The only team I see beating them in a 7-game series is Indiana.

Who will win the NBA Championship next season?

There are so many unknowns at this point (injuries, draft, trades, free agents, etc)... But I'll go with OKC. I say they add one more piece to the puzzle and Durant finally gets over the Finals hump (after losing this year in them, in addition to a couple years ago).
