Week
1 of college football is in the books. I hope the Clemson/Georgia showdown was
a preview of what’s to come this season cause that was exciting! A number of
solid performances actually took place though and the Heisman trophy will
seemingly have a lot of quality options this year. Week 2 I think is even
better on paper…
Picks
Standings
Andrew: 3 – 2
Greg: 1 – 4
As
you can see, Andrew was slightly more successful in his first week picks, in
large part because he picked the “big games” correctly. We’ll see what happens
this week:
6 South
Carolina at 11 Georgia
Andrew:
Georgia – These two squads had
completely different games a week ago. But it gets thrown out the window in
this showdown. South Carolina may boast the best overall player (Clowney), but
Georgia boasts the best QB (Murray) and it’s often that position that can go
out and win big football games. Murray was outclassed last week, but I think he
shows up big at home.
Greg:
Georgia - I'm picking Georgia again
this week for the same reason I did last week. Aaron Murray cannot afford to
continue to play badly in big games and be drafted where he expects to be
drafted. If Georgia loses this game, they will be two games behind South
Carolina in the SEC East and have virtually no shot at getting to the SEC title
game, or the National Championship. The Bulldogs need to rely more heavily on
Todd Gurley and the running game.
Andrew: Georgia 28, South Carolina 24
Greg: Georgia 38, South Carolina 31
12 Florida at
Miami
Andrew:
Florida – This in-state rivalry
should be an entertaining game as both teams had nice wins last week. But
Florida had five key players suspended last week and they’ll welcome them back
in with open arms for this game. Florida boasts the better defense and will win
on the road.
Greg:
Miami - This should be one of the
better games of the week. Miami is an explosive offensive team, and Florida has
sputtered over the last few seasons. Miami holds a decisive edge in the series
between the two schools and I see that continuing in this game.
Andrew: Florida 24, Miami 20
Greg:
Miami 24, Florida 13
14 Notre Dame
at 17 Michigan
Andrew:
Michigan – This really is a tough
game to predict. Both teams looked great a week ago, even after losing big name
players from last year. My gut is actually telling me Notre Dame, but they won
too many close game last year and I think their luck has to run out at some
point.
Greg:
Notre Dame - This should be an
exciting game. Both teams are fairly evenly matched, with Notre Dame's defense
coming in slightly more highly touted, though they looked poor against Temple
last week despite only giving up 6 points. Tommy Rees will have to play
turnover free, and the Irish will have to run the ball well and defend the pass
consistently in order to beat Devon Gardner and the Wolverines. The Irish have
only won 2 of the last 9 meetings between the teams in Ann Arbor, but this week
is one of them.
Andrew: Michigan 31, Notre Dame 24
Greg: Notre Dame 30, Michigan 23
West Virginia
at 16 Oklahoma
Andrew:
Oklahoma – Easiest game of the week
to predict. Oklahoma is better on both sides of the ball, they are playing at
home, and WVU doesn’t have the home run hitters they did last season. I say the
Sooners roll.
Greg:
Oklahoma - Oklahoma looked excellent
last week in a shellacking of a good Louisiana Monroe team. West Virginia lost
its three best players last season and are playing on the road in Norman, where
the Sooners rarely lose. This won't be a close game in my opinion, as the
Sooners will run the Mountaineers right out of town.
Andrew: Oklahoma 35, West Virginia 17
Greg: Oklahoma 45, West Virginia 20
Upset Alert
Andrew:
SE Louisiana over 24 TCU – TCU is
coming off a loss is a big game, so maybe they have a mental letdown a week
later. Last week, a FCS school pulled off a big upset (Eastern Washington over
Oregon St.), so why can’t it happen again? It will be closer than people
expect, so I’ll go with this flyer.
Greg:
BYU over 15 Texas - This game is the
most likely upset of the weekend in my opinion. David Ash did not play well in
the Longhorns opening weekend win, and if he plays poorly again he will allow
his team to lose to a good BYU team. Expect Kyle Van Noy to terrorize the
Longhorns offense and lead BYU to a victory.
Enjoy week 2!
