NFL Power Rankings
After Week 2
NOTE: Previous ranking is noted in the first parenthesis.
Current team record noted in the second parenthesis.
1. (1) Denver Broncos (2-0) – Peyton’s encore after his 7
TD’s? Smoking his brother’s team on the road.
2. (3) Seattle Seahawks (2-0) – They are one of the best
home teams in the league, as San Francisco found out Sunday night. Their
defense is also the best, and Sherman is the defensive POY early on.
3. (4) Houston Texans (2-0) – Another ugly win for Houston,
but a big day for their rookie WR DeAndre Hopkins, who came up huge after Andre
Johnson got injured.
4. (2) San Francisco 49ers (1-1) – A week after torching
Green Bay on offense, Kaepernick and company looked completely lost on that
side of the ball against Seattle. That is a little worrisome.
5. (7) Green Bay Packers (1-1) – Aaron Rodgers was great,
but James Starks rushing for over 100 yards was recent history. First time
that’s been done by a Green Bay player in 45 games!
6. (6) Atlanta Falcons (1-1) – Despite allowing the Rams to
make it close at the end, Atlanta got back to business in week 2, particularly
Julio Jones!
7. (5) New England Patriots (2-0) – Tom Brady obviously
isn’t quite on the same page as his young receivers, but a close win over his
archrival is a win nonetheless.
8. (8) Chicago Bears (2-0) – Cutler was good (28-39, 290
yards, 3 TD’s including the game-winner)… but he was also bad (3 turnovers
including one returned for a TD). He must find consistently in order to remain
unbeaten.
9.
(11) New Orleans Saints (2-0) – For the second straight game, I was more
impressed by the Saints defense than the Saints offense (minus Jimmy Graham).
10. (13) Kansas City Chiefs (2-0) – I think their win over
Dallas proved they are a legit playoff contender, especially in the weakened
AFC. The defense has been the most impressive part of the team thus far.
11. (12) Cincinnati Bengals (1-1) – Last night, Cincy got a
huge win against a divisional foe to avoid the dreaded 0-2 start. Rookies
Bernard and Eifert looked very good.
12. (10) Dallas Cowboys (1-1) – Losing by one at Candlestick
isn’t the worst thing in the world (especially when they got hooked late on a
bad interference call), but the offense probably did leave some points out
there.
13. (17) Baltimore Ravens (1-1) – The defense definitely
recovered after the embarrassment they endured last week at Denver, but it was
only Cleveland.
14. (21) Miami Dolphins (2-0) – Last week’s win wasn’t that
impressive, but winning at Indy got me to notice them. Maybe that Mike Wallace
connection is finally coming around (9, 115, 1).
15. (9) Indianapolis Colts (1-1) – Just not sure what the identity in Indy is: Are they an
elite offensive team (no)… so are they predicated on good defense (no)…
16.
(22) San Diego Chargers (1-1) – After nearly beating Houston last week on the
road, San Diego pulled out a close win this week at Philadelphia. Early on at
least, it seems the Chargers won’t be a pushover like expected. Royal has 5 TD’s
in two games.
17.
(25) Arizona Cardinals (1-1) – Told you last week they’d charge up the
standings. Due to some bad play from a lot of teams, they jumped eight spots
already.
18.
(14) Detroit Lions (1-1) – Calvin Johnson showed up this week, but he was about
the only one to do so. Thought they might get it done late, but the offense
just stalled over and over.
19.
(24) Buffalo Bills (1-1) – E.J. Manuel got the first win of his career. It came
down to the end, but a late TD to Stevie got it done. Good for him.
20.
(15) Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) – People questioned whether their offense could
maintain a crazy pace like it did in the first half last week. They did better, but the defense couldn't keep up.
21.
(16) St. Louis Rams (1-1) – The Rams fought back well against the mighty
Falcons, but the defense looked fairly inadequate for most of the game.
22.
(18) Carolina Panthers (0-2) – Victory was taken from them right at the end of
the game, and I still am waiting for Cam Newton to break out.
23.
(23) Minnesota Vikings (0-2) – Same thing as Carolina, except AD instead of
Cam.
24.
(26) Tennessee Titans (1-1) – Honestly could be 2-0 at this point after losing
in OT on Sunday, but they could also be 0-2.
25.
(31) Oakland Raiders (1-1) – They got their first win Sunday, based on defense,
along with the fact they were playing Jacksonville. A W is a W though.
26.
(20) New York Giants (0-2) – WWWWAAAAYYYY too many turnovers. They must protect
the ball better or they will keep losing.
27.
(27) New York Jets (1-1) – It’s clear that the defense is good enough to keep
them in games, but it’s also clear that Geno Smith may not always take
advantage.
28.
(28) Pittsburgh Steelers (0-2) – For the first time in a long time, Big Ben’s
offense looks to be a mess. They need Le’Veon Bell back in a big way to give
them somebody to lean on.
29.
(29) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-2) – Heartbreak city once again. Late FG miss
proved to be the difference.
30.
(19) Washington Redskins (0-2) – Washington has been the most disappointing
team in the league to me. They have no defense at all, and the offense only
plays in the second half.
31. (30) Cleveland Browns (0-2) – The good news is
that their defense seems to stand up to teams well. The bad news is that they
can’t score against anyone.
32. (32) Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) – Thought
Henne was going to be a slight upgrade over injured Blaine Gabbert… he wasn’t.
